Role of the Tokyo Metropolitan Tachikawa District Disaster Prevention Center

The national government has been preparing the Tachikawa Wide-Area Disaster Management Base as the overall disaster management base on the assumption of serious damage to capital functions due to a wide-area disaster over the south Kanto district. Among them, the Tokyo Metropolitan Tachikawa District Disaster Prevention Center is the base for disaster prevention activities over the Tama area under instruction from the Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Center.

Gathering information and coordinating liaison operations
As a base for disaster prevention activities around the Tama area, the Center shares information and coordinates liaisons with the national government, municipalities, and local disaster prevention agencies under the supervision of the Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Center.
Disaster management office
Through images (moving and still images) using large screens and monitors, and various information via data terminals, users can gather information on earthquake struck areas.
Monitors are available for videoconferences on emergency operations.
Communications room
Share information with affected areas, municipalities, and the Disaster Prevention Center using wireless phones and fax.
Stockpiling/transportation
Depot
In order to provide relief to the Tama area and logistical support to wards, the Center stores commodities including survival foods, blankets, and medical equipment. It also swiftly accumulates and distributes procured materials during a disaster.
Securing required human resources
Tachikawa Midorimachi housing block for disaster management staff
Provides rooms for staff engaging in initial response activities for disaster relief. (40 rooms for families/25 rooms for singles)

Houses TMG local branches.
Tachikawa/Akishima office at Bureau of Construction's north building offices at north Tama
Temporal shelters, etc.
Provides places to sleep and food from the depot to evacuees who lost homes due to a catastrophic disaster in the Tama area.
Temporary shelters (gym room)
Place to accumulate and distribute emergency supplies. Also used as a temporary shelter for citizens.
Conference room
Used for conferences on emergency relief activities and as a place where assembled staffs wait for orders.
Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Center back-up facility
Computer room
In preparation for possible disruption of computers for disaster information systems, the Center has computers to get the systems' data and program working properly.
1Functions
The center's various functions include collating information, communications, stocking of emergency supplies, and to be the temporary shelter.

2Building
The building consists of the disaster management unit and residential unit. The steadfast design of the facility includes an earthquake-resistant and quake-absorbing structure, an independent power generator capable of continuous operation for 72 hours, and a water tank.
